SPEECH OUTCOMES

Speech courses equip students to be able to achieve the following:

  • Critically analyze and evaluate communication (written, oral, and/or multimodal) using various methods of rhetorical analysis.
  • Construct and present oral arguments with rhetorical goals including (but not limited to) informing and persuading.
  • Understand, and when applicable apply and extend, communication theory, concepts or models, critically engaging theory into practice in societal contexts.
  • Critically examine evidence for possible use in messages.
  • Reflect through their rhetorical choices an understanding of responsible communication ethics.
  • Explore connections between speaking and writing clearly, including similarities and differences among modes of communication.
  • Practice the exploration and dynamics of speechmaking, identifying processes, products, and relationships between processes and products.
